Gion District — Geisha Quarter
Kyoto · Cultural Experience
60–180 min
🚶 3 3 min walk from Gion-Shijo Station (Keihan Line)

Insider Tip
Hanami-koji is most atmospheric at dusk (5–6pm). For a quieter experience, walk along the Shirakawa canal one block north — weeping willows, stone bridges, and traditional lanterns.
JEMS Tip
We brief you on photography restrictions (Gion has strict no-photography zones for maiko) and guide you to the less-known Shirakawa canal area where the atmosphere is equally beautiful but far less crowded.
About
Gion is Kyoto's most famous geisha district. Hanami-koji street is lined with traditional wooden machiya teahouses. In the early evening, you may spot maiko (apprentice geisha) walking to their engagements. The district also houses excellent kaiseki restaurants and traditional shops.
Crowd Avoidance
Visit on weekday mornings right at opening. Avoid rainy days when indoor attractions get busier. Book timed-entry tickets when available.
Getting There
Gion-Shijo Station (Keihan Line) — exit 6, immediate access to Hanami-koji. Also bus 100/206 from Kyoto Station.
