Insider Tip
Buy a small maneki-neko (¥300-¥1,000) at the temple office, make a wish, then return it when the wish comes true.
JEMS Tip
We pair this with a ride on the charming Tokyu Setagaya Line (Tokyo's last remaining streetcar-style tram).
About
Gotokuji is believed to be the birthplace of the maneki-neko (beckoning cat). The temple grounds are filled with thousands of white cat figurines left as offerings. A peaceful, photogenic spot far from the tourist crowds.
Crowd Avoidance
Visit early morning at opening time or late afternoon to avoid tour groups. Weekdays are much quieter than weekends.
Getting There
