Insider Tip
Request a room with a private rotenburo (outdoor bath) for the ultimate experience. Many ryokan offer day-use bathing (¥1,500–¥3,000) if you cannot stay overnight.
JEMS Tip
We secure reservations at ryokan that are difficult to book from overseas (Japanese-language phone only) and match you with the right property based on your preferences — private onsen, mountain views, or historic atmosphere.
About
Hakone is one of Japan's premier onsen (hot spring) destinations. A night at a traditional ryokan includes kaiseki dinner, yukata robes, tatami rooms, and access to both indoor and outdoor (rotenburo) natural hot spring baths fed by volcanic mineral water.
Crowd Avoidance
Visit between 2-4pm when most guests are sightseeing, or after 9pm for a quiet soak. Avoid weekends and holiday periods.
Getting There
Various locations throughout Hakone. Most ryokan offer shuttle service from Hakone-Yumoto Station.
