Insider Tip

Beyond the summit, spend time exploring the historic Motomachi slopes, particularly Hachimanzaka, before or after your ropeway trip. In winter, these streets, including Hachimanzaka, host the Hakodate Illumination, creating a magical atmosphere that complements the night view from above. At the observatory, challenge yourselves to find the 'heart' shape rumored to be hidden within the city lights for good fortune in love.

JEMS Tip

JEMS advises timing your ascent to capture the serene twilight transition, when the sky shifts from fiery orange to deep indigo, offering a more tranquil experience before peak crowds arrive. We pre-check the ropeway's operational status, especially during the mid-October to mid-November maintenance window, and can arrange priority boarding or private gondola options for an exclusive ascent to the summit.

About

The Mt. Hakodate Ropeway offers a scenic three-minute ascent in a 125-passenger gondola to the 334-meter summit, providing panoramic views that transform with the seasons. From the summit observatory, marvel at Hakodate's unique topography, nestled between two seas, and experience the day-to-night transformation into a world-renowned 'jewel box' night view.

Crowd Avoidance

To avoid the extreme crowds that gather for the night view, especially on weekends and holidays, aim for a weekday visit. Consider ascending either immediately after opening (10:00 AM) for tranquil daytime views or arriving right at dusk on a clear evening, aiming for an earlier dinner on the summit to extend your viewing time before the busiest period (typically 7-9 PM).

Getting There

From JR Hakodate Station, take the Hakodate Streetcar (Route 2 or 5) to Jujigai Station, which is approximately a 7-minute ride. From Jujigai, the lower ropeway station is a pleasant 10-minute walk uphill through the charming Motomachi district.
