Insider Tip

Visit at dawn for an almost private experience. The temple grounds open at 6am and the main hall at 6:30am — you'll have the iconic Kaminarimon shot without a single tourist in frame.

JEMS Tip

We time your visit for early morning (before 8am) when the grounds are nearly empty and the incense smoke creates ethereal photo opportunities. We also map the best Nakamise stalls for authentic souvenirs vs. tourist traps.

About

Senso-ji in Asakusa is Tokyo's oldest and most visited temple, dating back to 645 AD. The approach through Nakamise-dori shopping street is lined with traditional craft and snack stalls. The main hall and five-story pagoda are stunning, especially when illuminated at night.

Crowd Avoidance

Visit before 8am or after 7pm. Weekday mornings are significantly quieter than weekends.

Getting There
