Insider Tip

The Shiroyama viewpoint offers the classic panoramic photo of the village. Winter illumination events (Jan–Feb) are magical but require advance lottery registration. Stay overnight in a gassho-zukuri house for the full experience.

JEMS Tip

We secure the limited winter illumination event tickets (lottery system, applications months in advance) and arrange overnight stays in gassho-zukuri farmhouses for the most immersive experience.

About

Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO World Heritage village of traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses with steep thatched roofs designed to withstand heavy snowfall. The village looks like a scene from a fairy tale, especially in winter when covered in snow and illuminated at night.

Crowd Avoidance

Visit on weekdays and arrive early for the best experience with fewer crowds. Avoid national holidays and peak tourist seasons.

Getting There

Bus from Takayama (50 min) or Kanazawa (75 min). No direct train access.
