Insider Tip

The view from the exit path (after the main viewing area) offers a less crowded angle. Visit right at opening (9am) for the best light and fewest people.

JEMS Tip

We pair Kinkaku-ji with nearby Ryoan-ji (rock garden) and Ninna-ji for a northwest Kyoto temple circuit that most tourists don't connect efficiently.

About

Kinkaku-ji (Temple of the Golden Pavilion) is one of Japan's most iconic images. The top two floors are covered entirely in gold leaf, and the reflection in the surrounding pond creates a perfect symmetry. Originally built in 1397, the current structure dates from 1955.

Crowd Avoidance

Arrive at opening (9am) or visit after 3:30pm. The reflection in the pond is best in morning light. Avoid weekends and holidays.

Getting There

Bus 101 or 205 from Kyoto Station to Kinkaku-ji-michi stop (40 min). Taxi is faster (20 min, ~¥2,000).
