About
Koyasan is the center of Shingon Buddhism, founded in 816 AD. Over 50 temples offer overnight stays (shukubo) with vegetarian monk cuisine, morning prayers, and the atmospheric Okunoin cemetery with 200,000 tombstones among ancient cedars.
Crowd Avoidance
Start early morning for the best experience and fewer people. Autumn foliage and cherry blossom seasons are the most crowded periods.
