Insider Tip

The castle is most photogenic with the Alps in the background — visit on a clear day. The moat reflects the castle beautifully at dawn. Nakamachi street has excellent craft shops and cafes.

JEMS Tip

We pair Matsumoto Castle with the charming Nakamachi street (preserved merchant quarter) and the Matsumoto City Museum of Art for a full day in this underrated city.

About

Matsumoto Castle is one of only five castles designated as National Treasures. Its striking black exterior earned it the nickname "Crow Castle." The original wooden keep dates from the 1590s and offers panoramic views of the Japanese Alps from the top floor.

Crowd Avoidance

Visit on weekdays and arrive early for the best experience with fewer crowds. Avoid national holidays and peak tourist seasons.

Getting There

Matsumoto Station (JR Shinonoi Line / Azusa Limited Express from Shinjuku, 2.5 hrs) — 15-minute walk to the castle.
