Insider Tip

After visiting the main spiritual sites, instead of rushing back to the ropeway station, take a slight detour to the very top observatory. This less-crowded viewpoint offers an unobstructed 360-degree panorama, perfect for photography. Also, seek out the "Kiezu-no-Hi" (Undying Flame) in Reikado Hall, which is one of the Seven Wonders of Misen and holds significant spiritual importance, often overlooked by those solely focused on the expansive views.

JEMS Tip

For optimal convenience, utilize the Momijidani Ropeway, ensuring tickets are pre-purchased online if available or by arriving at opening to minimize wait times. When ascending, position yourself on the right side of the gondola for the best views of the Seto Inland Sea. Consider descending via the Daisho-in trail for a gentler, more scenic route, allowing exploration of the extensive Daisho-in Temple complex at the base before rejoining the main ferry path.

About

Mount Misen is the sacred highest peak on Miyajima island, offering breathtaking 360-degree views of the Seto Inland Sea. Accessible by a scenic ropeway or challenging hiking trails, the summit is home to ancient spiritual sites including Reikado Hall, where a flame continuously burns since the 9th century, and various temples established by Kobo Daishi.

Crowd Avoidance

To genuinely avoid crowds, aim for the very first ropeway ascent (usually 9:00 AM) or a late afternoon ascent (after 3:00 PM) to catch the sunset, avoiding midday peak hours. Weekdays, especially Tuesday through Thursday, are significantly less crowded than weekends or national holidays. Avoid peak autumn foliage (late November) and Golden Week for the most serene experience.

Getting There

From Hiroshima Station, take the JR Sanyo Line to Miyajimaguchi Station (approx. 25-30 min). Transfer to a ferry (JR Ferry or Matsudai Ferry) for a 10-minute ride to Miyajima Island. From Miyajima Ferry Pier, walk approximately 20 minutes to the Miyajima Ropeway station.
