Insider Tip
The Daibutsu Hiking Trail connects Kita-Kamakura to the Great Buddha through the forest — far better than walking along the road. Once there, you can enter inside the hollow Buddha for ¥50; most visitors don't know this. The back of the statue also shows the casting seams.
JEMS Tip
JEMS provides historical context about the 1252 bronze Buddha and arranges a combined walking route connecting the best temples, including Hase-dera, via scenic hiking trails and avoiding crowded main streets.
About
A curated Japan experience awaits in Kamakura, Japan's political capital in the 13th century. The town's main attraction is the Great Buddha (Daibutsu) at Kotoku-in, a 13-meter bronze statue. Beyond the iconic Buddha, Kamakura boasts dozens of beautiful temples, scenic hiking trails connecting them, and a pleasant beach. JEMS provides insider access, optimal timing, and local knowledge to make this activity exceptional.
Crowd Avoidance
Arrive at opening (8am) to avoid tour groups and buses. After 3pm is also quieter as day-trippers head back to Tokyo. Weekdays are much quieter than weekends.
Getting There
Kamakura Station (JR Yokosuka Line from Tokyo, 60 min, or Enoden Line from Fujisawa). From Kamakura Station, take the Enoden Line to Hase Station (5 min). Walk 7 minutes north to Kotoku-in.
