Insider Tip
Kin no Yu (gold bath, ¥650) and Gin no Yu (silver bath, ¥550) are excellent public baths. The narrow streets have charming shops selling tansan senbei (carbonated crackers).
JEMS Tip
We book a ryokan with both kinsen and ginsen baths and pair with a Kobe beef dinner.
About
Arima Onsen is one of Japan's three ancient springs, with a 1,300-year history. Famous for two types of water: kinsen (gold, iron-rich, reddish-brown) and ginsen (silver, clear, carbonated). Just 30 minutes from central Kobe.
Crowd Avoidance
Visit between 2-4pm when most guests are sightseeing, or after 9pm for a quiet soak. Avoid weekends and holiday periods.
