About

Daitoku-ji is a vast Rinzai zen complex with over 20 sub-temples, several with exquisite rock gardens. Far less visited than Kyoto's famous temples, it offers genuine zen atmosphere and some of Japan's finest garden design.

Crowd Avoidance

Visit early morning at opening time or late afternoon to avoid tour groups. Weekdays are much quieter than weekends.

Bus 206 from Kyoto Station to Daitokuji-mae (30 min).
