Insider Tip
Bring a flashlight if arriving before sunrise. The small fox statues along the path each hold different symbolic items. The full hike to the summit takes 2-3 hours. Most tourists turn back at the Yotsutsuji intersection — continue past for empty trails.
JEMS Tip
JEMS arranges a first-light start to experience the torii gates in near-solitude, providing a detailed trail map that highlights optimal photo spots and guides you away from the most crowded sections.
About
Experience the iconic thousand vermillion torii gates of Fushimi Inari at dawn, before the crowds arrive. The 4km trail up Mount Inari passes through 10,000 gates, with atmospheric sub-shrines and fox statues along the way.
Crowd Avoidance
Dawn (before 6:30am) is the magic window to experience near-empty torii tunnels, as the shrine is open 24 hours with no gate restrictions. By 9am, the lower gates are packed. The upper mountain is always quieter.
Getting There
JR Nara Line to Inari Station (5 min from Kyoto Station). The shrine is immediately outside the station.
