Insider Tip
The upper garden path offers a panoramic view of Kyoto that most visitors skip. Visit right at opening (8:30am).
JEMS Tip
We connect Ginkaku-ji with the Philosopher's Path walk south to Nanzen-ji for a perfect half-day route.
About
Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion) was intended to be covered in silver leaf but never was — making it a perfect expression of wabi-sabi aesthetics. The sand garden with its iconic cone (Kogetsudai) and the moss garden are exquisite.
Crowd Avoidance
Visit early morning at opening time or late afternoon to avoid tour groups. Weekdays are much quieter than weekends.
Getting There
Bus 100 from Kyoto Station to Ginkaku-ji-michi (30 min), then 10-minute walk.
