Insider Tip

The park is one of Kyoto's best-kept secrets for cherry blossoms — far less crowded than Maruyama Park.

JEMS Tip

We arrange a guided tour of the palace interior (free, reservation recommended) and map the best cherry blossom spots in the park.

About

The Kyoto Imperial Palace served as the emperor's residence for over 1,000 years until 1869. The surrounding Kyoto Gyoen park is a vast green space popular for jogging, picnics, and cherry blossom viewing.

Crowd Avoidance

Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid tour bus crowds. Kyoto is most crowded during cherry blossom (late March-April) and autumn foliage (November) seasons.

Getting There

Imadegawa Station (Karasuma Line) — 5-minute walk to palace entrance.
