Insider Tip
Buy deer crackers (¥200) from the official vendors only. The deer near Todai-ji are aggressive — the ones in the quieter eastern park area are gentler. Nigatsu-do (free) has the best view in Nara.
JEMS Tip
We route your Nara day trip from Kyoto with optimal train timing and a walking route that hits Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha, and the quieter Nigatsu-do hall with its panoramic terrace — all before the tour buses arrive.
About
Nara Park is home to over 1,200 free-roaming sacred deer that bow for crackers. Todai-ji temple houses the Great Buddha (Daibutsu), a 15-meter bronze statue inside the world's largest wooden building. The park also includes Kasuga Taisha shrine with its thousands of stone lanterns.
Crowd Avoidance
Start early morning for the best experience and fewer people. Autumn foliage and cherry blossom seasons are the most crowded periods.
Getting There
Nara Station (JR Nara Line from Kyoto, 45 min) or Kintetsu Nara Station (35 min from Kyoto). Kintetsu is closer to the park.
