Insider Tip

Try to find the statue that looks like you. The moss-covered statues are most photogenic after rain.

JEMS Tip

We include this as a surprise extension to the standard Arashiyama visit — almost no tourists make it this far.

About

Otagi Nenbutsu-ji is a hidden gem beyond the Arashiyama tourist zone. The temple grounds are filled with 1,200 unique stone rakan (disciple) statues, each with a different expression — some laughing, some meditating, some playing instruments.

Crowd Avoidance

Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid tour bus crowds. Kyoto is most crowded during cherry blossom (late March-April) and autumn foliage (November) seasons.

Getting There

Bus 72 from Arashiyama to Otagi-dera (15 min). Or 30-minute walk from bamboo grove.
