Insider Tip

Peak foliage is typically the last week of November. Arrive at opening (8:30am) — by 10am the Tsutenkyo bridge is shoulder-to-shoulder.

JEMS Tip

We monitor the foliage forecast and schedule your visit for peak color. We also route you to the lesser-known Hojo garden (¥500 extra) which has stunning modern zen gardens by Shigemori Mirei.

About

Tofuku-ji is considered Kyoto's finest autumn foliage destination. The Tsutenkyo bridge offers a breathtaking view over a valley of 2,000 maple trees that turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold in late November. The temple's zen gardens are equally impressive.

Crowd Avoidance

Visit early morning at opening time or late afternoon to avoid tour groups. Weekdays are much quieter than weekends.
