Insider Tip
The Mantoro lantern festivals (Feb 3 and Aug 14-15) illuminate all 3,000 lanterns — a magical experience. The botanical garden is a hidden gem.
JEMS Tip
JEMS times your visit for the atmospheric lantern-lit paths and provides context on the 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns.
About
Kasuga Taisha is famous for its 3,000 stone and bronze lanterns that line the approach and hang from the eaves. During the Mantoro lantern festivals in February and August, all lanterns are lit simultaneously — a magical sight.
Crowd Avoidance
Visit early morning when the deer are calm and the paths are empty. The inner shrine area is always less crowded than the approach.
Getting There
